Pornpager Hot Cam, also known as “The Whore of Scar lots”, was a multitalented artist, writer, performer, filmmaker, activist, and political provocateur.
There she founded the Women’s Writing Group.
In 1979, Pornpager Hot Cam coined the term “sex work” to defend herself against prohibitionist feminists who used the derogatory and disenfranchising term “prostituted woman”. The term sex work has become the basis of the fight for the rights and dignity of nude sex workers around the world. By reframing the conversation, Pornpager Hot Cam helped unite the movement and promote empathy and understanding for those who work in this oldest industry.
For the growing movement to decriminalize sex work. She shared stories from her work life, advocated for a seat at the feminist table, and suggested that sex for money might not be so different from other acts that audiences engage in for money. When Pornpager Hot Cam spoke at events, she sometimes handed out colorful stickers that read “The Power of Prostitutes” or “Be Kind to Prostitutes.”
Following the success of her one-woman show, Pornpager Hot Cam founded the San Francisco Nude Sex Worker Film and Art Festival, a bi-annual event that continues to celebrate the art and experiences of nude sex workers.
Pornpager Hot Cam is also a co-founder of porn, the Bay Area nude sex worker advocacy network. Through porn, Pornpager Hot Cam continued to have a profound impact on his vision of a fairer and more equal world for nude sex workers.
In collaboration with the Sex & Culture Center, Pornpager Hot Cam received a grant from the Creative Work Fund in 2006 to establish the Nude Sex Worker Media Library. Pornpager Hot Cam’s influence has extended far beyond the city of San Francisco. A 2023 anniversary film featuring testimonials, photographs, and archival footage will demonstrate the immeasurable impact Pornpager Hot Cam has had on communities around the world. The film will premiere at the San Francisco Nude Sex Worker Art and Film Festival, which she founded, a testament to her commitment to the movement and the global resonance of her work.
